SF Connected: Digital Literacy Program

Free Digital literacy classes @ the conard tech LAB

In partnership with the San Francisco Human Services Agency (SFHSA), through the  SF Connected program, Conard House offers free digital literacy classes in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Vietnamese to older adults and adults with disabilities with the objective of helping these populations understand how broadband access will be useful to them in their daily lives. The program also provides social media tools to help individuals overcome social isolation, access resources for healthy aging, slow the progress of cognitive impairment, and learn skills to manage personal finances or increase income.

These classes are offered to Conard House Consumers free of charge.

Smart phone session

  This 5-week course covers all the basics of using an Android smartphone. Some topics covered are basic phone settings, using the internet, connecting to the Wi-Fi, operating systems, home screens, using the camera, applications, and phishing emails and scams. The instructors take a few minutes every session to field questions about the use of the device or any advanced features that the clients might be interested in learning more about. At the end of the five weeks, all participants receive their new free smartphone, prepaid phone service (3 months), and a certificate of completion.

tablet session

This 5-week course covers everything you need to know about using a tablet. Some topics covered are using the internet, connecting to the Wi-Fi, setting up a Gmail account, operating systems, home screens, applications, and phishing emails and scams. The instructors take a few minutes every session to field questions about the use of the device or any advanced features that the clients might be interested in learning more about. At the end of the five weeks, all participants receive their new free tablet, a brand new case for it, and a certificate of completion.

typing session

Upon completion of the tablet training, the graduated clients can enroll in typing basics session, which is a 2-hour long course. Using an interactive online tool, the participants can learn to type as the module takes them through different levels of typing (easy to advanced). It also allows the participants to practice their typing skills, including punctuation keys and shortcuts. Everybody who completes this typing session receives a Bluetooth keyboard that can be connected to their smartphones or tablets and a certificate of completion.
